PowerWorks was officially opened in November 1994 following an extensive refurbishment of the SECV‟s Morwell Visitors‟ Reception Centre.
PowerWorks was initially operated by Generation Victoria, the corporatized generating arm of the SECV, to “ensure broad community awareness of the history, operations and policy initiatives of the Victorian power industry”.
Shortly after the opening of PowerWorks, Generation Victoria ceased to exist and the individual Latrobe Valley generators were corporatized and subsequently privatised. The new entities became PowerWorks shareholders and a Board of Directors was established.
In December 2012 PowerWorks Visitor Information/Energy Education closed their doors to the public.
In February 2013 six community members came together and formed PowerWorks Holdings Ltd, a community based not–for-profit social enterprise.
PowerWorks Holdings Ltd successfully negotiated with the owners of the PowerWorks Visitor Information/Energy Education Centre for the property to be generously donated in 2015 for on-going community use.
On the 26th March 2015 PowerWorks Holdings Ltd took possession of the PowerWorks Visitor Centre and surrounding land.
The current PowerWorks Visitor Centre is operated and maintained by volunteers, and a voluntary Board of Management.
Dredger 21, situated at the entrance to Ridge Road, was gifted in 2010 to Gippsland International Inc. They are the custodians of Dredger 21.
